As humans, we take comfort in conformity. If we see lots of other people doing something, then it must be OK, right?
Or when it comes to business, if lots of people are doing something, then it must be working, right?
These are dangerous assumptions to make when it comes to marketing and growing your business – especially if you’re in the home improvement space.
Mistake 1 – One Size Fits All
Home improvement contractors tend to believe that what they do isn’t all that different from what their competitors down the street do.
Just because you’re a kitchen & bath remodeler and there are other competitors in town doesn’t mean your businesses are exactly alike, or that you serve the same types of clientele, or that you value your services the same.
The truth is that each home improvement business is unique in the way it operates – ESPECIALLY the successful ones.
That’s why it’s a huge mistake to assume that a “one size fits all” marketing plan that supposedly works for every other roofer in your market will work for you.
Just because your end product is the same doesn’t mean your path to growth is the same as well!
Mistake 2 – It MUST Be Working
The 2nd big mistake is looking at what your competitors are doing marketing-wise and assuming it’s working!
In other words, just because you see them running Google Ads, adding chat widgets to their websites, or posting on social media, that doesn’t mean they’re seeing success from those tactics.
In fact, the opposite is usually true.
Those competitors are probably looking at what you’re doing and wondering the same thing… how are you successful when they’re doing A, B & C and it’s not working for them.
Don’t assume that just because someone is doing something, they’re happy with the results.
The Smarter Approach
Don’t be a lemming and do things just because they’re easy (one-size-fits-all) or you see others in your niche doing them.
